Day 2: Johannesburg
Johannesburg – Nelson Mandela Sites in Soweto. March 29 / Today you will enjoy a city tour of Johannesburg and start in Soweto where you will visit Mandela House. The Nelson Mandela National Museum, or commonly referred to as Mandela House, is the house on Vilakazi Street in Soweto where Nelson Mandela lived from 1946 to 1962. The house is a single-story red-brick matchbox built in 1945. It has bullet holes in the walls and the facade has scorch marks from attacks with Molotov cocktails (petrol bomb). The inside hosts some original furnishings and memorabilia including photographs, citations given to Nelson Mandela, and the world championship belt given to Mandela by Sugar Ray Leonard. Mandela came back to the house after his release from prison in 1990, despite suggestions from government officials that he find a safer home. However, after 11 days back at the house he moved out again. You can enjoy lunch at a restaurant in the famous Vilakazi Street. Probably the most famous street in the township of Soweto in Johannesburg. It's named after Dr BW Vilakazi who was a poet, novelist and intellectual. He was the first black man to teach at the University of Witwatersrand and helped to write the isiZulu dictionary. Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu lived in this street and Nelson Mandela’s house is still there today, now a museum. A street full of real history and has a wonderful cultural vibe. (B)
